Ask The Experts Recap

January 11, 2018

A lot of people begin the New Year by making resolutions. We have all been there. We take a vow to reduce weight, exercise more, eat healthy, spend more time with our family, and quit smoking -- to name just a few popular ones. We start the year with great intentions, but then we quickly relapse into old habits (usually around February). Why is it so hard to stick to those New Year's resolutions? Here a few reasons and what you could do about them:

-Resolutions are often all about what you think you should be doing, rather than what you really want to be doing. This often results in lack of motivation and commitment, and leads to endless procrastination. Why don't you focus on something YOU really want to change and on the WHY you want to change?

-You are in this alone, instead of having someone to be accountable to, who supports you and keeps you on track along the way. Let's face it, it is easier to fall off the wagon than go back on. So, my advice, reach out! Book a free 40-minute breakthrough coaching call today: https://www.pamelabiascalosada.com/services/breakthrough-coaching-call.

-You want to reach too many goals at once and too quickly. The reality is: Long lasting changes take time. Pick one or two goals instead of a dozen, and give yourself some time.

-You are not getting to the source of whatever is keeping you in a rut. Are you in a stressful relationship that causes you to eat ice cream or drink alcohol at night? Are you overwhelmed at your job or as a busy parent and feel too tired to exercise? If you don't tackle the root of the behavior, it will be much harder to accomplish your goal.

-Lack of Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps us be more aware of our internal state and the feelings that are driving our actions. Instead of focusing only on goals, add mindfulness around how you feel about those goals. Mindfulness is also helping you buy some time to avoid to act on impulse (then regretting it, and leave you with guilt) and choose behaviors that are in your best interest instead.

-Wrong timing. Are you in the "My sister is getting married in June and I have to fit in the fancy dress (3 or more sizes smaller)" or "Let's wait until after the Holidays" mode? Why wait for a particular day or month to make a decision and take action, when there are 364 other equally great starting days available to you?

With this, I wish you all the best for taking charge of your health and well-being. May your New Year's resolutions be successful long term! Need support? Want to make this time to be different than years in the past? As your health and emotional empowerment coach, I can help you establish a happier, healthier way of life.
